I think all my curly gals can agree, a deep conditioner is key to healthy curly hair. In this natural hair journey of mine,  I am constantly on the hunt for the best of the best and when it comes to my weekly deep conditioning treatments and mask, I take the job seriously. Before I jump into my favorite masks and deep conditioning treatments, let’s gets some knowledge as to why deep conditioning is a must!

Why Is Deep Conditioning Important?

If you didn’t know, curly hair tends to be dryer than any other type of hair. Normal conditioner is great for adding moisture after shampooing, but a deep conditioner is taking it one step further. For may curl-friends, it’s a great way to revive your curls. Deep conditioning is great for combating frizz, supercharges growth, prevents split ends, and definitely helps repair heat damage.

How Often Should You Mask Up & Deep Condition?

Personally, I deep conditional weekly. Yep, that’s once a week where I dedicate time to nourish my curls. However, if you’re hair needs a little extra TLC, don’t be afraid to mask up twice in one week to add moisture.

How To Deep Condition?

I’m sure every curl gal has her own deep conditioning routine but let me tell you about mine. I start off by washing my hair with shampoo or pre-poo. I then condition my hair per usual to detangle, plus who doesn’t love a little extra moisture?! After I remove the conditioner, completely, I apply the deep conditioner.

Now, this is where I change things up every now and again. Sometimes after applying my deep conditioner I finish showering like usual and then wash out the conditioner and go about my day. However lately, I’ve been applying the deep conditioner, tieing it up in a topknot with a scrunchie, showering, getting out of the shower, and leaving the deep conditioner in my hair for roughly 20-30 minutes. After the time is up, I then rinse the deep conditioner out with cold water.

My Favorite Hair Masks and Deep Conditioners

Cantu Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioning Repair – Although this isn’t necessarily a deep conditioner, I use it as a leave-in mask. The argan oil is meant to encourage shine, elasticity, and growth and I feel like that’s exactly what it does. It’s on the thicker end and smells so good. As a 3c/4a curly gal, it doesn’t dry out my hair which is a godsend.

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Hair Smoothie – This is great for when I need a real hit of moisture, it is so hydrating! Again, this is also on the thicker end which I prefer for my hair type. It’s so great for combating frizz which has been an issue for me this summer. I also love that it has no parabens or petroleum.

Arvazallia Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner – First off, this does include silicones which I cut out of my hair care products, however, this is one of the only exceptions to that rule. It’s extremely moisturizing and hydrating. I think this suits very think curly/coily hair versus thinner hair.

Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner – This has helped in defrizzing my hair and it smells really good. Again, it is very hydrating and my hair feels moisturized after every use. It’s great for detangling my hair, too.

(not pictured) Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Hair Mask – My hair soaks this stuff right up, in the best way possible! It smells heavenly and leaves my hair extremely soft. This is especially great for chemically treated hair.

My Conditioners (not pictured):

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist Deep Conditioner – I actually use this as a regular conditioner which I apply for detangling purposes right before I deep condition. I have been using almost since the very beginning of my natural hair journey and love it. Plus, the price can’t be beat!

Biolage Matrix Ultra Hydra Source Hair Conditioning Balm – again, I use this as a regular conditioner as a means to help detangle my hair. I’ve been using this for forever, even before I went natural because it detangles my hair like a dream and prevents breakage. This also smells so good!
