My curl friends can commiserate with me – the dreaded wash day is a day we all dispose. While I believe that sentiment to my core, I also want to let you in on my secret – it’s all about the shampoo. I’m being completely serious here. The shampoos you apply to your hair are the first line of defense and if they’re packed with ingredients that do more damage than good, the rest of the wash day process will be a pain.

First things first, you need to skip products that have parabens, phthalates, and synthetic dyes. Products that don’t include these ingredients are easier to find nowadays. If you have one or two shampoos, conditioners, or styling products with them, it’s not necessarily a no-no, but try to avoid them if you can. They tend to strip your hair of moisture which is essential for healthy curls. You should only be using shampoos that hydrate – think shea butter, argon oil, avocado oil, and almond oil. These ingredients reduce frizz which is always a plus. Keep reading for a few of my favorites curly-girl approved shampoos!

My Favorite Curl-Friendly Shampoos

Biolage 3 Butter Control System Shampoo – I love how hydrating this shampoo is! There’s great lather without it completely stripping my scalp of the necessarily oils my hair needs. The formula locks in that hydration and beats frizz.
Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight Shampoo – I shared about this product in my Stories last month and got lots of positive feedback from readers. Y’all love this too! What’s so cool about it is that it starts off as a liquid but then foams up as you lather! It’s made with Aloe so your scalp is left fresh and moisturized.

SheaMoisture Curl and Shine Shampoo – This was the first shampoo I fell in love with as a curly gal and it’s still part of my rotation! This shampoo is more targeted for women that have thicker, courser curls. It’s packed with oils that help cleans, hydrate, and detangle which is a major win.

(not pictured) Verb Curl Shampoo – This product keeps your curls bouncy and hydrated all while gently remove impurities. This is another shampoo that injects a ton of moisture to my curls which I love. Plus, it reduces frizz.
