People say that mothers are the most selfless humans around. We tend to do everything for our families and as such we tend to sacrifice ourselves and our time to those we are caring for. Once children come into the picture “me time” flies out the window, along with long showers, drinking hot coffee in one sitting, and your identity as someone other than a mom.

Motherhood is tough but I’ve learned that God doesn’t gift you with something unless He knows you can handle it. So each day I remind myself about this fact and I encourage you other mama’s out there to do the same. But a simple reminder like that doesn’t quite rejuvenate the mind, body or soul enough to hedge through this motherhood journey each and every day does it? It doesn’t which is why actually taking “me time” is important.

Mom guilt is real and I know tons of other mama’s that don’t like to take personal time to themselves because they feel they are neglecting their motherly duties. Let me just say this – you are right, you are neglecting someone but it ain’t your kids, it’s you. By neglecting the person you once were you are doing a disservice to the person/mother you’re supposed to become, and you’re definitely doing a disservice to your family.

In the long run, taking time for yourself makes you a better mom, a better wife, a better employee, a better friend, etc. Personally, in order to function as a decent human being I need time to rejuvenate and recharge. Whether that’s taking 30-60 minutes to read a book, go on a walk, sit quietly, pray, meet up with girlfriends, workout – whatever your “me time” looks like know that it’s necessary or else you’re no go to anyone. At the end of the day I want to be the best version of myself for these awesome people I get to call my family, and in order to do that I need to unselfishly claim my time and enjoy it, not feel guilty about it. So today I want all my tired mama’s to take some time to yourselves. However you decide to take it, please take it. It’s important to both you and your family.
