We made it through January, y’all, and the January memes that are going around on social media have been cracking me up (ex: “January was a tough year but we made it.”)! As we enter the second month of 2018, I’d like to ask you this: has the “New Year, New Me” feeling worn off? If you’re wondering about me, it hasn’t – I’m still flying high but I think I can credit most of that to the new job. (If you don’t follow me on Instagram then you might not be aware that I started a new
job career in mid-January – but more on that in a separate post.)
This is the time of the year that that twinkly feeling of a new and shiny horizon starts to wear off. You wanna know why? It’s because evolving and growing into a better version of yourself requires you to step out of your comfort zone. And while it’s fun for the first 31 days of the year, once February hits it’s more of an inconvenience than anything else. It requires commitment, hard work and dedication – all which should last more than just a month.
But I’m here to encourage you not to quite on yourself. Don’t stop bettering yourself just because it’s inconvenient. Keep at those early morning workouts. Stay up just a little later to finish that chapter. Jot that idea down. Add that calendar reminder. Skip the Starbucks to stay within your budget. Don’t allow the novelty of the New Year to wear off – let this be your year. Most of the time, if not always, growth requires discomfort – putting in time and hard work when you’re on empty, trying something new blindly but with sheer courage for the betterment of your life/self-esteem/what have you.
Lasting and enduring results requires stepping out past that ledge where you are comfortable. And while the inconvenience may not last, it’s a prerequisite for true growth. I implore you to stay in that inconvenient space just a little longer but know that it’s a necessary step in becoming the person you’re meant to be.
