I’m a firm believer that the way I approach my personal style in the morning has a ripple effect on how I tackle my day. It’s so trivial and foolish but what I wear to jump start my day really does dictate how that day goes, at least in my head;) As silly as it sounds, I think that taking fashion risks can give you the confidence to take risks in your every day life and try new things.

Having said that, taking sartorial risks can be just that – risky. What is cool and trendy now can totally become a faux pas in a matter of months. Remember neon, or gold flesh tattoos? HA! While those risks might eventually become fashion regrets, I think it’s still important to step out of your personal style comfort zone every now and again. If not to make a statement than to be bold in your every day life – because again, there’s a correlation. Here are just a four reasons why it’s important to take risks when it comes to your personal style.

1 // It keeps things interesting! We’ve been told time and time again that our personal style is an outward expression of who we are. Our thoughts, our beliefs, our values can be communicated without actually speaking words. Just as it’s fun to spice things up sartorially, it’s just as fun to do so in our every day lives so by trying something new when it comes to your personal style you might gain the confidence to try something new in your personal life.

2 // You learn to not be afraid. Sure, it can be a little scary to try a different style jeans or a trendy bell sleeve top but you shouldn’t be afraid to dip your toes in the water. Experimenting with accessories is a great and easy way to try something out of your comfort zone without having to fully commit to a trend. Try doing the same in your life and take a small step towards something that scares you like learning how to speak a different language, or looking at the course catalog to get your Masters degree.

3 // It gets you noticed. It may be hard to believe, but at work I’m someone that tends to be on he quieter side. Funny, I know but speaking up takes courage that I actually channel from what I’m wearing on any given day. If I’m taking a fashion risk, I’m more apt to speak up and take charge because it inspires me to get noticed for something more than what I’m wearing.

4 // It helps you grow. Risks, both in personal style and in life, help you establish your likes, your dislikes and what works best for you. There’s a big chance you’ll fall flat on your face for trying something new – again both in fashion and in life – but the mistakes made along the way only help you grow and establish you you’re meant to be.

So tell me this, how are you taking a fashion risk? Let’s discuss via Instagram or Facebook!
