International Women’s Day

Did you know today is International Women’s Day? There have been several events happening all over (both nationally and globally) for the last several weeks, in preparation, but today is the day! What is International Women’s Day, you ask? Well to me its two things – 1) a celebration of all of our accomplishments, socially, politically and economically, and 2) it’s a day to reflect on all the injustices we as women still face – from the gender gap in the workforce, to the inequality we are challenged with every single day.

Both women and men can take a step forward in gender equality in all facets of our lives. (Pop) Culturally, celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Lena Dunham and Merly Streep have been voicing their opinion in Hollywood to pay actresses just as much as the top actors are making. But that problem isn’t just in Hollywood. The IT industry is also suffering from a gender gap, in which women are underrepresented in the field.

Simple things like encouraging the younger female generation with positive language goes a long way. I want to encourage Remy that her possibilities are limitless! We must also develop a language that is inclusive to all genders and cultures and that respects the differences between our culture. So this International Women’s Day I urge you all to do just that, commit to take action and become an influencer in your own community.
